Overview
Settings → Data Controls holds three things: whether new chats go into your history, how to get a copy of your data out, and how to delete what is already there.
Chat History toggle
Find the Chat History row ("Save new chats to your history automatically"):
- On — new conversations are saved and appear in your sidebar. This is the default.
- Off — new conversations stop appearing in your sidebar and stop being included in exports.
With the toggle off, conversations are still stored on your account. It hides them from your history; it does not stop them being recorded.
If you want a conversation that is genuinely not written down, use Private Chat instead: click the Private pill on the new-chat screen. Nothing you type in a private chat is saved to your history — though a durable fact you mention can still be picked up by Memory, so check Settings → Memory if that matters to you.
Exporting your data
1. Start the export
Settings → Data Controls → Export Data → Export.
2. Choose a format
- JSON Format — structured data, good for importing elsewhere.
- Markdown — readable text with formatting preserved.
- Plain Text — the simplest possible copy.
- PDF — not available for a bulk export.
The export covers your 50 most recent conversations, up to 100 messages from each. It does not include chats hidden by the Chat History toggle, your saved memories, or your project files — save anything from those separately.
The PDF Document tile currently returns a plain-text file. To get a real PDF, open the ⋯ menu on a single chat in the sidebar and choose Download PDF.
Deleting your data
- Delete a chat — open the ⋯ menu on it in the sidebar, choose Delete, and confirm in the Delete Chat dialog.
- Delete an archived chat — Settings → Data Controls → Archived Chats → Manage, then the trash icon ("Delete permanently") on the row.
- Revoke a shared link — Settings → Data Controls → Shared Links → Manage, then the red trash icon on the row. The chat stays; only the public link stops working.
- Delete your account — Settings → Account → Delete Account (see Deleting Your Account).
There is no button that clears every chat at once. They are removed one at a time; deleting your account removes them all.
FAQ
I turned history off — are my chats private now?
They are hidden, not unsaved. Private Chat is the control that does not write the conversation down.
My PDF export is a text file.
That is a known bug in the bulk export. Use Download PDF on an individual chat instead.
Why does my export only have 50 chats?
That is the limit of the bulk export. Export individual chats for anything older.
