Ask Torki

Talk to Torki out loud

Choose one of seven voice companions, press "Voice" in the chat input bar, and hold a spoken conversation that is written into a new chat of its own.

Voice works on a Free account, in Torki on the web, and it has no separate allowance of its own — there are no voice minutes. Each spoken turn you take counts as one message against the same allowance as typed chat, which on Free is 25 messages every 5 hours, and only your own turns are counted.

Torki has seven voice companions, and a spoken conversation with one of them runs on a single control: the same button starts the call and ends it. You pick a companion in Settings, press "Voice" in the chat input bar, speak a sentence at a time, and Torki answers out loud. The conversation is written into a brand-new chat rather than the one you started from, which is the part most people are surprised by.

How it works, step by step

1

Pick your companion

Open Settings and choose the Voice tab. There are seven cards — Torki / Default Assistant, Elli / Creative Writer, Poppy / Business Buddy, Eywa / Code Companion, Kalli / Social Guru, Pooline / Research Pro and 61 / Support Hero — and clicking one is the save; there is no Save button. The bar underneath updates to Currently selected: Kalli, and Preview voice plays a one-line sample in that voice (Hello, I'm Kalli!) while the button reads Playing....

2

Press the Voice button

Go to a chat, or stay on the screen you land on. With the composer empty and nothing attached, a button showing a three-bar waveform, the word Voice and a small purple BETA badge sits in the input bar; hovering it reads Voice mode (Beta). It disappears the moment you type or attach a file, so clear the composer if you cannot see it.

3

Allow the microphone

Click the button. It turns your companion's colour and reads Stop straight away, and your browser asks for microphone access — Torki shows no prompt, tour or onboarding of its own. Allow it and the button changes to Listening, which is the moment the call is actually live.

4

Speak

There is nothing to hold down and nothing to watch while you talk — there is no live transcription of your words. When you stop, your finished sentence appears in the thread as your message and the button reads Thinking. If you started from a chat that already had messages, the banner is sitting at the top of the thread with your companion's avatar, Kalli joined the chat and Social Guru — ready to help you; on an empty new chat that banner only appears after your first sentence lands.

5

Let the reply finish

The button reads Speaking and the edges of the screen glow in your companion's colour while Torki answers out loud; the written reply appears in the thread as the spoken answer finishes, and the glow goes off at the same moment. Your microphone is not listened to while Torki is talking, so let the reply finish before you speak again — anything you say over it is lost, with nothing on screen to tell you. The button going back to Listening means the turn is yours again, but it can flip back while the tail of the audio is still playing, so wait until you can no longer hear Torki.

6

Stop, and find the conversation

Click the same button again to end the call. The conversation is written into its own brand-new chat, not the one you were looking at, and it shows up in the sidebar after your next reload or navigation, auto-titled from the first thing you said. Reload the chat you pressed Voice from and it is unchanged.

Before you start

The things people hit on their first try, so you do not have to find them the hard way.

  • The call is saved as its own new chat

Pressing Voice always creates a new chat in the background, even from inside an existing conversation, and only that new chat receives the transcript. The turns you watch during the call are not kept in the chat you started from. The new chat is not visible in the sidebar while the call is running — it appears after a reload or after you navigate — and it is titled from your first spoken sentence. Anything you say in the first moment of a call, before that new chat exists, is not written into it. If Chat History is turned off in Settings → Data Controls, the call is not saved to your history.

  • You cannot talk over Torki

While Torki is speaking, your microphone is not listened to. There is no interrupting, no push-to-talk and nothing to hold down; anything you say during the reply is lost, with nothing on screen to tell you. Wait until Torki has finished speaking — the button reads Listening again — then speak.

  • Pick your companion before you start

Choosing a different card in Settings during a live call changes the name, the role and the colours on screen, but not the voice you are hearing. To change companion, stop the call and start it again.

  • Nothing on screen reports a problem

If you deny the microphone, the button sits on Stop with no message — click it again to end the call, then retry. If you run out of messages part-way through, the call carries on out loud while the rest of it stops being written to your history, and nothing says so.
