Everything on this page works on a Free account: writing the document, the PDF, the DOCX, and the Google Drive connector behind "Save to Google Docs" — connectors are available on every plan. Free accounts get 25 messages per 5 hours, and a new account receives a one-time code by email before the first sign-in, so allow for that step.

Turn on the Canvas tool and Torki writes plans, reports, proposals and itineraries into a side panel called Canvas rather than into the chat bubble, so what comes back is a formatted document instead of message text. From there it downloads as a PDF or a Word file, or saves into your Google Drive as a Doc. Here is the whole path, including the places it behaves differently from what you would expect.

How it works, step by step

Turn Canvas on

Click the round + to the left of the chat box — its tooltip reads Tools — and pick Canvas, the item carrying a purple BETA pill. A Canvas chip appears above the box and the placeholder changes from Ask anything to Create or edit a document....

Ask for it as a document

Type the request as a document — write me a 90-day go-to-market plan, a 5-day Kyoto itinerary, draft a one-page project proposal. Words like plan, report, proposal, outline and itinerary send it down the document route; words like dashboard, landing page, app or compare send the same request to a web page or a table instead, so keep those out of the sentence.

Read it under Preview

Part-way through the reply the Canvas panel opens beside the chat and fills in as the document is written, while the chat bubble keeps only Torki's short summary of what it made. You land on Preview, the right half of the Code / Preview pill, where headings, tables and checklists render as a document. There is no button that copies the whole thing — that is what the downloads are for.

Download it

Stay on Preview and click Download. The menu is headed Download as and holds three items: PDF, described as Rendered markdown as PDF; DOCX, described as Microsoft Word document; and Save to Google Docs, described as Save to your Google Drive (requires write scope). The PDF arrives paginated with selectable text, a TORKI header on every page and a Page X of Y footer.

Come back to it later

Reopen that chat from the sidebar and the document is already on screen — the panel reopens with the conversation, with no card to click. A document of twenty lines or more also leaves a card in the message reading Canvas with Markdown · Click to open underneath; a shorter one gets no card and is printed into the message itself instead. A follow-up question does not rewrite the open document; it writes a new one under the new message.

Before you start

The things people hit on their first try, so you do not have to find them the hard way.

  • "Download" only exists on "Preview"

    The button renders only while the Preview half of the Code / Preview pill is selected. Click Code to look at the raw Markdown and the button disappears; click Preview and it is back. On a narrow screen it is an icon with no word beside it.

  • The "×" on the "Canvas" chip starts a new chat

    It does not quietly switch the tool off. Clicking it opens a dialog headed Start a new chat? whose only button is Start New Chat, and that clears the conversation you were in and drops you on a blank chat — the conversation itself is still in the sidebar. Closing the dialog instead leaves the Canvas tool selected and your conversation where it was.

  • "Save to Google Docs" needs Google Drive specifically

    Connect it in Settings under Connectors, on the Google Workspace card, using the Google Drive row described as Create & manage files — connecting Google Calendar or Google Sheets alone will not do. Without it the export fails with a red toast reading Google Drive not connected. followed by (click to dismiss). When it does work the new Doc opens in a fresh browser tab, so if your browser blocks the pop-up you will not see anything happen and there is no in-app link to fall back on.

  • Renaming changes the filename, not the title inside

    The title field at the top of the panel sets the name of the file you download. The title printed inside the PDF and on the Google Doc is taken from the document's own first heading, so renaming the canvas does not change it.

  • It is laid out for a wide screen

    On a desktop the panel sits beside the chat and you can drag the divider to give the document more room, within limits; the width resets when you reload the page. On a phone it opens over the chat behind a dark overlay instead of sitting next to it, and there is no divider to drag.
