Free is enough for everything on this page. A Free account gets 25 messages every 5 hours, and each question you send here is one of them, including the one the file rides on. The limit you are likely to hit first is how much of the sheet Torki reads, not the plan.

You can put a CSV or Excel file into a Torki chat and ask what is happening in the numbers. Torki pulls the rows out of the file and answers from them, and if you ask for an HTML page it writes a chart you can open, edit and save. Two things catch people out: how much of the sheet actually gets read, and the wording that decides whether the chart is built from your file or made up.

How it works, step by step

Attach the file

Click the + to the left of the composer — its tooltip reads Tools — then Add files or photos. You can also drag the file onto the composer, which outlines in purple and reads Drop files here. Either way the file appears as a chip above the text box; CSV and Excel are both accepted, up to 50MB each.

Type the question before you press Enter

The file uploads with your message rather than when you attach it, so put the question in the same message: Which product line lost the most margin this quarter, and why? Torki turns the sheet into a column list and one line per row, puts that in front of your question, and answers from those rows. Nothing on screen reports the file being read — the answer simply arrives with your numbers in it.

Attach the file again to ask for a page

The rows are read only for the message they ride on, so attach the file a second time and put the page request in that message: Build an HTML page that shows this month by month as bars. The word HTML is what sends the request down the path that carries your rows. Keep chart and table words out of that sentence — bar chart, chart of, chart showing, kpi, dashboard and spreadsheet are all read first and send the request somewhere else.

Edit it and press Run

The Canvas panel opens beside the chat on its own as the page is written. The Code / Preview pill switches between the source and the live page: change something in Code, then press the green Run in the status bar and it redraws in Preview. The status bar next to it reads No errors, or 1 error when something is broken.

Save it as one .html file

Switch to Preview — the Download button appears only there — and open the menu headed Download as. Choose HTML, described Single .html file, and the page is written to your downloads under its own file name, usually index.html rather than the canvas title. Opening it later needs a connection, because the chart library loads from the web.

Before you start

The things people hit on their first try, so you do not have to find them the hard way.

  • Attach the file again for each question

    The rows are read for the message they ride on, and a later question in the same thread does not have them. Every time you come back to the same numbers, attach the file to that message too, or you will get an answer written without it.

  • Chart words take the request away from your file

    Wording it as a bar chart, chart of, chart showing, kpi or dashboard gets you a chart inside the answer bubble rather than a page in Canvas, and that chart is written from your sentence alone by a pass that never sees your file. The answer text above it still reads your rows; the chart under it does not, and its labels and numbers will look plausible without being yours.

  • How much of the sheet is read

    Torki scans up to 500 rows, shows the model the first 200 and cuts off at 50,000 characters per file — a sheet you could talk a colleague through, not a warehouse. A file over 50MB never reaches the upload at all: it is dropped from the tray with no chip and no message.

  • "Data Analyst" in the + menu does nothing to your file

    Picking it changes two things: the chip above the composer and the placeholder, which becomes Describe data to analyze.... It does not change how your message is handled, so attach the file and ask in plain words instead.
